What is Hernias
Ultrasound is highly effective for diagnosing hernias, especially when symptoms are intermittent or the lump is difficult to assess on physical examination. It clearly shows defects in the abdominal wall and can demonstrate fat or bowel pushing through an area where it shouldn’t, confirming the presence of a hernia.
It helps distinguish between hernia types such as inguinal, femoral, umbilical, epigastric, and incisional hernias. Ultrasound also assesses whether the hernia is reducible, contains bowel, or becomes more pronounced during coughing or straining.
Additionally, it can detect complications such as incarceration or strangulation, where tissue becomes trapped or loses blood supply—conditions that require urgent intervention.
Because hernias can mimic other lumps, ultrasound is essential for accurate diagnosis and ensuring the right treatment path.
